John has a good ability to strike the right balance between knowing when entrepreneurs require active assistance and also when they do not. Prior to joining ONSET in 2008, John led venture investing efforts in the medical technology sector for Panorama Capital, JPMorgan Partners, and Chase Capital Partners, and before that focused on health care related investments with Morgan Stanley Venture Partners. During that time, he participated in investments in companies such as FlowCardia (acquired by C.R. Bard), Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG), R2 Technologies (acquired by Hologic), and Rita Medical Systems (acquired by AngioDynamics). Previously, John worked with Morgan Stanley as an investment banker focused on M&A and financing for a broad range of health care companies worldwide.

In his spare time, John is a triathlete. He brings this competitive drive, work ethic, and endurance to his investing practice and work with ONSET’s portfolio of medical technology companies. John also volunteers with several organizations including industry groups, universities, angel investing groups, and not-for-profit organizations. He is a board member of Sutter Health’s Bay Area Operating Unit (10 hospitals, 3,000 affiliated physicians, and over 2 million active patients).

John holds an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors from the University of Colorado.

The pace of innovation is accelerating in medical. I see PhD students doing in six months what used to take 10 years and 100 million dollars. It’s exciting to see these opportunities and even more exciting to work toward helping them succeed.
